Home surveillance, WiFi-enabled cameras, remote monitoring… all great ideas for home security… unless your camera gets hacked.
At Newave, we are concerned about your business information security, but we are also concerned about the people we serve. Here is some useful information to ensure that your home security camera system isn’t vulnerable to hackers.
The problems:
- Most of hacked WiFi cameras in the unsecured IP camera list were exposed due to default passwords or a lack of password protection
- Hackers are using a technique called “clickjacking”. These applications have programming code that places a feature (almost invisible) on a webpage that a user might click, such as a “play” button. When a user chooses to play the content, they are actually giving permissions allowing access to their webcams and IP cameras

Protect yourself:
Your home WiFi network is the first place to start. Make sure that you use an encryption method such as WPA2-AES, have a strong password for your home router, change the SSID name, and evaluate your guest networking.

- Understand that if you can remotely view what is happening in your home, consider turning the feature off when you are not using it. Leaving that portal open exposes you to security threats
- Updating your camera’s firmware not only enhances performance, it also corrects any known flaws with the system
- Webcams are staples on devices such as desktops and laptops, and they are a cyber threat risk if any malware is present that lets them spy on you. A low-tech way to prevent prying eyes is to simply cover the camera when it’s not in use. Make sure to prevent adhesive residue or use a sticky note as an option
- Beware of any unofficial password-recovery emails and phishing scams
Technology-based home security isn’t going anywhere. Make sure you are up to date on the latest measures to protect you and your family.
